DBMV 2010 Winter Shootout CHAMPIONS!

After an opening round loss the team rebounded with three strait wins including clean sheets in the semi finals and finals. According to coach Bolin: "Our athletes could have packed it in after the first loss, but they didn't". "They came back even stronger and reorganized themselves which shows a lot of heart". Second round action saw G97 Blue returning to their prior run of good form. Pinpoint passing and surgical finishing produced a 2-1 victory with Ashley Roskelly scoring the first goal with a clinical finish placing the ball calmly in the back of the net. Luli Bethencourt then provided the winning goal with a nice bit of skill beating the goalkeeper off the far post.

The victory was enough to place G97 Blue in the semi-finals were they faced the first place team from the other bracket. But Ashley Roskelly's 2 goal performance (both of which where 20 yard rockets!) was too much and G97's run of good form continued with a 2-0 victory. Back up goalkeeper, Jessica Matson, produced the clean sheet which set a rematch of game one for the final.

In the final, facing a determined and gritty silver team they had previously lost to, G97 maintained possession and balance which lead to a foul resulting in set piece just outside the penalty box. Set piece specialist, Kaylee Bolin, produced a wicked blast over the wall which proved too much for the goalkeeper putting Blue up 1-0 going into the half. The second half picked up where the first ended with G97 providing the majority of possession. With 10 minutes left in the game, Kaylee Bolin again fired a blast past the goalkeeper cementing the game and the tournament championship. Clean sheets were compliments of CC McPhee, Makayla Lictenwalter, Jules Zuniga, Audrey Briseno, and GK Gillian Kliss. Well done girls! And congratulations!

2009 Bronze Central Champions!

Chelsea G97 - Blue finished an awesome season in spectacular fashion with an udefeated 13-0-1 record! Our athletes worked very hard with continued improvement in foot speed, skills, and tactical shape. All combined to make this a successful growth opportunity.

The defending core lead by Kaylee Bolin, Audrey Briseno, Cecilia McPhee, Makayla Lictenwalter, and Gillian Kliss gave up only 4 goals ALL SEASON! Gillian produced a total 11 clean sheets. Truly tremendous.

All fall, the team had been working on linkage between the defenders and strikers. Which means all things go through our midfielders in transition. The midfielder crew lead by Ashley Roskelly, Madeleine ("Maddie") Olsen, Julia Tan, Emily Pelstring, and Dominique Oden served up those "killer-through-balls" which lead to 50 goals for the season. Awesome distribution team!

So who scored those 50 goals? Our quick and tuff strikers lead by Lauren ("Luli') Bethencourt, Quincy Burtenshaw, Karlie Bennett, and Jessica Matson supplied a power scoring punch. It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight IN the dog! Fabulous finishing girls!

With certain promotion looming, the team is looking forward to the many challenges that await. Congratulations on a fantastic season! Keep up the hard work!

2008 Chelsea Kickoff Classic Finalists!

Congratulations on another great weekend of soccer! Thanks to all the volunteers who put time in over the past weeks. Whether it be working the sign ups, collating and bagging pins, or field marshalling, a heartfelt thank you to all!

Special thanks to Jeff and Colleen Kliss who organized the snack shack and to Jeff who was a very professional field marshal. Thanks again!

Also, special shout out to our tournament MVP’s: Dominique Oden and Makayla Lichtenwalter. Our two outside backs played tuff! Learning quickly to contain, delay, balance, stay compact, and win every 50/50 ball! Job well done!

What is Futsal?

The above video was taken on Sunday 6/29/08. All athletes are from the G97 team, plus Patchy.

Futsal was created and developed in 1930 in Uruguay by Physical Education Professor Juan Carlos Ceriani. After the first World Cup of Soccer in Uruguay for the trophy “Jules Rimet”, Professor Ceriani concluded, that in order for Uruguay to win the next World Cup, the players needed more agility and faster thinking, that was where the other teams showed superiority, they were much faster than the Uruguayans.
In order to increase the agility of Uruguayan players, Professor Ceriani taught of making the players play in a more reduced space, so they forced to move and think faster. Futsal, came alive when he put his theory in practice on a basketball court at the YMCA in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay were he earned his living as a Professor of Physical Education.
Since it was played in a enclosed space it was called Futbol de salon or free translated ,room or court soccer. That new modality of playing soccer immediately spread to the neighboring countries, Argentina World’s Vice-Champion, Paraguay and Brazil.
The “Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol de Salón” or the Futsal Federation of South-America was created in Paraguay’s capital Asuncion.

2008 California Spring Cup Champions!

On a warm, sunny weekend, Chelsea G97 Blue made their debut at the California Spring Cup. Playing as a team for the first time, they prevailed over their opposition at every turn. Controlling both sides of the pitch, Chelsea scored 18 goals and only allowed 1 goal as its offensive firepower and defensive wall was too much for their opponents to handle over the two day tournament. The girls used every inch of their bodies, from the soles of their boots all the way up to their heads, to dominate each match. They played with a lot of heart and determination and never wavered from their goals to play hard, not give up, and have fun! This championship was truly a team effort with all girls contributing – whether it was the great defending and passing by Bridgett, Briana, Adelle, McKayla, Camila, or the hat trick by Kaylee and Luli, or the assists and goals by Molly, Jessie, Karlie, Dominique, Ashley, C.C., and Sophia, or the amazing saves by goalies Jillian and Cassidy – each girl gave 100 percent! The final battle was to be waged on Sunday against Ballistic, a team from Nevada. Chelsea had beaten them on Saturday 2 – 1 and knew they were coming back for revenge. And so the stage was set for the final showdown. A capacity crowd of friends and family rooted fervently from the touchlines as the referee blew the final whistle. In true Chelsea fashion, G97’s hard work and determination were realized. G97 defeated Ballistic 4 – 0 and were named California Spring Cup Champions!
